What is the Kreisler?

Der Kreisler ist ein nachbarschaftlicher Ort für zirkuläre Grundversorgung. Ein Raum, in dem Menschen zusammenkommen,Dinge und Wissen teilen oder weitergeben, reparieren (lassen) und sich gegenseitig unterstützen – für weniger Verschwendung und mehr Gemeinschaft im Kiez.

In other words, we make repairing, borrowing and sharing as easy as buying new - accessible and affordable for everyone. Our first location in Neukölln's Gropiusstadt district is open four days a week, centrally located and a complete success after one year.

Always a Kreisler within slipper distance

Our goal: More Kreisler than McDonald's branches - of which there are currently almost 40 throughout Berlin. Why? So that (almost) all Berliners have the opportunity to use their items for as long as possible - within walking distance and for every budget.

These locations can enable tens of thousands of repairs every year, avoid spending on new purchases, keep the streets cleaner and reduce emissions. At the same time, a Kreisler strengthens social cohesion: people come together, help each other and learn from each other.

Provide free rooms for circular centers

Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaften und andere Akteure stellen leerstehende Erdgeschossflächen und Gewerberäume mietfrei oder zu symbolischen Kosten für gemeinwohlorientierte, zirkuläre Zentren bereit. So wird Reparatur als Teil der öffentlichen Daseinsvorsorge sichtbar, nahbar und dauerhaft im Alltag verankert.

Investieren und finanzielle Anreize setzen

Öffentliche Mittel wirken am stärksten als langfristige Investitionen in Infrastruktur, ergänzt durch finanzielle Anreize wie den ReparaturBONUS. Eine einmalige Anschubfinanzierung ermöglicht den Aufbau eines Kreisler-Standorts, der sich anschließend gemeinschaftsgetragen selbst trägt und über viele Jahre ökologische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Wirkung entfaltet.

Durch eine geplante, dezentrale Skalierung auf Basis des erprobten Kreisler-Modells können diese Initiativen langfristig gestärkt werden: mit stabilen Rahmenbedingungen, verlässlicher Finanzierung und der Perspektive auf bezahlte Arbeitsplätze.

Um den wachsenden Reparaturbedarf zu decken, braucht es ein neues Berufsbild des "Reparateurs" und ein niedrigschwelliges Qualifizierungs- und Anerkennungsmodell für die Reparaturpraxis. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Weitergabe von Wissen, Praxislernen und lokaler Beschäftigung und dem Abbau von rechtlichen Hürden.

Deutschland erzeugt jährlich rund 1 Million Tonnen Elektro-Haushaltsabfälle. Viele Geräte landen im Müll, obwohl sie reparierbar wären oder weiter genutzt werden könnten.

At the same time, a current Study by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations: 80 % der Menschen reparieren nicht,  weil Reparaturen zu teuer sind. 58 % reparieren nicht,  weil es zu kompliziert oder unpraktisch ist. Es fehlt nicht an Bereitschaft – sondern an zugänglicher, lokaler Infrastruktur. Gerade günstige, kleine oder alte Geräte sind aber oft zeitaufwendig in der Reparatur und daher für Unternehmen nicht zu dem Preis machbar, den Menschen dafür zahlen würden, da ein neues Gerät dann günstiger ist. Es gibt daher echten Bedarf, eine nicht-kommerzielle Alternative zu schaffen!

Mit dem Kreisler haben wir die passende Lösung auf die Beine gestellt und mit unserem ersten Standort mehr als 500 Reparaturen durchgeführt und 200 Vereinsmitglieder erreicht, die ihre Geräte sonst weggeworfen hätten. Dabei haben wir festgestellt, dass wir neue Zielgruppen erreichen, weil Reparatur aus Verbraucher-Sicht ein echtes Problem löst und somit sowohl ökonomisch als auch ökologisch sinnvoll ist.

At the Kreisler, people can have their things repaired - at our first location, this mainly involves electronics, small household appliances, textiles and small items of furniture. We also have tools, household appliances and outdoor equipment that can be borrowed. We also accept selected donations, i.e. appliances that are still in working order, which then find a new owner, and organize a monthly flea market at our pilot location.

Depending on the size of the Kreisler, the offer could be expanded to include a 3D printing station and a small makerspace, coffee corner or similar. If we actually manage to build a Berlin-wide network, there are many more possibilities: For example, we could become a collection point for appliances from brands such as Bosch & Co. so that the companies can get their old products back and use them to produce new appliances in the spirit of the circular economy. Closed-loop concepts like this are currently failing to be implemented due to the lack of a collection system. With the Kreisler, we are ready to help build such innovative structures. Always with an eye on what we need as a society so that the sensible idea of the circular economy - not wasting anything - becomes a reality!

The Berlin Senate is currently spending 2.5 million over two years on the repair bonus. This is a one-off subsidy for just under 30,000 people, i.e. a fraction of Berlin's population - with no long-term effect. The same amount could be invested in 50 Kreisler locations, which, with the help of donations and flexible membership fees, would be 100 % self-sustaining after 1-2 years and guarantee repair services in the long term - for everyone!

Das Reparieren, Leihen und Tauschen ist beim Kreisler gegen eine freie Spende möglich. Wer beitragen möchte, kann das mit einem wählbaren Mitgliedsbeitrag zwischen 2,50 € und 18 € im Monat – je nachdem, was zum eigenen Geldbeutel passt. So entsteht ein sicheres, planbares Einkommen für den laufenden Betrieb, das die Standorte unabhängig von Projektförderungen oder schrumpfenden öffentlichen Budgets macht. Die brauchen wir natürlich weiterhin. Den Kreisler sehen wir als sinnvolle Ergänzung, um eine flächendeckende Reparatur für Geräte aller Art zu ermöglichen. Repair Cafés leben vom gemeinsamen Machen und dem Weitergeben von Wissen – das ist wichtig! Das Repair Café-Format gibt es bei uns am Offenen Reparaturmittwoch, wir reparieren im Sinne der Nachbarschaftshilfe aber auch für unsere Mitglieder, ohne dass diese anwesend sein müssen. So sind wir für andere Zielgruppen die passende Lösung – etwa für Menschen, die Vollzeit arbeiten, Kinder haben und wo die Zeit für das DIY-Reparieren am Wochenende fehlt. Wir konnten in unserem ersten Jahr fast alle Geräte reparieren, mit denen Menschen zu uns gekommen sind. Besonders bei kleinen oder alten Geräten, also bei denen sich im klassischen Sinne eine Reparatur nicht lohnen würde, weil sie zu teuer wäre, können wir helfen und viele Geräte vor dem Müll retten. Wir haben aber auch klare Grenzen: Größere Geräte (Waschmaschinen, Fernseher, …) können wir zum Beispiel nicht reparieren. Hier sind professionelle Handwerksbetriebe gefragt!

For our vision of operating 50 locations throughout Berlin, we need both: Repair Cafés, which have often worked under precarious conditions up to now (e.g. without a fixed space), can stabilize and grow with our community-supported model if they want to. We already pass on repairs of large appliances to businesses in the area, but in future we could share larger areas in order to jointly cover the growing demand for repairs. The Kreisler will thus become a shared roof - and the first port of call for Berliners.

The Kreisler is a registered, non-profit association. With around 12 active members - some employed, some volunteers - we currently run one location in Gropiusstadt and want to grow into a network of many of our own locations with the help of committed neighbors and groups in other neighborhoods. To achieve this, we are building on existing repair initiatives and neighborhood energy. Every Kreisler lives from the neighborhood for the neighborhood and creates 2.5 permanent jobs in addition to volunteer work. One challenge here is the repair knowledge that is slowly being lost. We are therefore launching a low-threshold format later this year to teach interested parties how to repair electronics and textiles, 3D printing and organizational matters.

Die Standorte funktionieren nach dem Prinzip eines Social Franchises: erkennbar gleich, miteinander vernetzt und voneinander lernend. Ähnlich wie bei McDonald’s, aber sozial gerecht organisiert, lokal eigenständig und zum Nutzen aller. Die Wiedererkennung ist ein wichtiger Punkt: Wir sind täglich von großen Ketten und Marken umgeben, gehen dort einkaufen oder einen Kaffee trinken. In unserem Wirtschaftssystem gilt noch oft: Größer ist besser. Wenn viele Standorte sich Name, Logo, Aussehen und Kommunikation teilen, können sich Menschen leichter daran erinnern, es strahlt unterbewusst Vertrauen und gleiche Qualität aus. Das wollen wir uns zunutze machen, während wir durch das dezentrale Netzwerk – alle Standorte agieren auf Augenhöhe und unterstützen sich – die Nachteile des klassischen Franchise-Systems auflösen. Social Franchise bedeutet: mehr Sichtbarkeit und gute Kreislauf-Versorgung für alle statt Profitmaximierung für wenige.

The right location is crucial in order to be accessible and visible in people's everyday lives. Our pilot location in a small but well-frequented shopping center directly at the U7 Wutzkyallee subway exit has already been a real success after a short time. There is currently more than enough vacant commercial space in Berlin - including in prime locations, in shopping centers and in the portfolio of municipal housing companies - whose potential we could exploit. This is how we can revitalize our city after years of shrinking retail!

In 2024, we opened the first Kreisler in Neukölln's Gropiusstadt district. In 2026, we will make the idea big and mobilize interested parties, supporters and fellow campaigners for a Berlin network of Kreislers with a city-wide campaign. By 2030, we will scale up together to ideally 50 Kreisler locations throughout Berlin and make repairing a nationwide reality. We work with a social franchise model so that the individual locations are independent, but we learn from each other and share resources as a network. Together we are strong!

Our name is inspired by the Austrian „Greißler“ - a corner store that used to exist in almost every village, where people could buy everyday products and exchange ideas. Today, unfortunately, these have almost completely disappeared. We want to revive the idea of a locally anchored infrastructure that is accessible to everyone - today for repairing, borrowing and swapping! This is where the „circle“ in the name comes from, which stands for the circular economy and the idea of keeping resources, skills and value creation in local cycles.
